Statistically it is claimed that more students who take coaching classes score higher in the JEE Advanced exam. However, it is a fact that what is taught in IIT JEE coaching, can as easily be done by self studies. Advantages of joining a coaching centre: The biggest advantage is the exposure to competition. While what a student scores in board exams indicate his/her intelligence and hardwork, to score high in IIT JEE demands a slightly different and higher aptitude.
As the coaching centre concentrates solely on polishing the ability to face competitive exams, the student learns tips and tricks to gain speed and increase accuracy in the exam. Disadvantages of joining a coaching centre: If time is not managed properly, the student may end up wasting time in the IIT JEE coaching classes.

To join a coaching centre, decide wisely. Self study can also give good results with the right amount of dedication and hard work. TIME MANAGEMENT “All successful men, even Einstein had only 24 hours in a day“. It is vital to remember that each hour counts. Time has to be wisely divided among the following – school, travel, coaching classes / tuition, sleep, physical activities, entertainment. Many students ask “How many hours should I study for IIT JEE?”.
The answer to that would be “at least 5-6 hours a day”. Sleep 6 hours School 7-8 hours Travel 1 hour Coaching / Tuition 2-3 hours (this could be 4 hours in some cases) Self Studies 5-6 hours Other miscellaneous activities 1 hour As can be seen from the table above, it is a tight schedule. For an increase in hours of any of the fields, time slot for the other gets cut short.
For example, if you take more time in travelling from one place to another, then your time for self studies becomes less; or even worse, you get to sleep less. Do not panic in such a situation. If you cannot devote too long on weekdays, make up for it on weekends.

Be wise when it comes to dividing time between important things. Try to cut down on futile activities and keep a large portion of time for self studies. EFFECTIVE PREPARATION Take notes while you study. Do not panic when a new method of solving questions or a new approach is introduced. Always review what you have studied in the past few days.
Keep a day in a week to test yourself. Always ask your teacher when you cannot understand a certain topic. Do not hesitate or feel shy. Avoid distractions such as mobile phones, futile internet searches and so on. Be thorough with all topics. A superficial understanding of any topic will not help in IIT JEE. If you are comfortable with group studies, go for it. Keep a track of your strengths and weaknesses.

Learn, self assess and revise. IIT JEE VS BOARD EXAMS The basic rules for studying and preparation remain the same for board exams as well as engineering entrance exams.
There are slight differences when it comes to How to approach the preparation for JEE Advanced. Take a look at the IIT JEE Syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. While more than 85% of it is common with the CBSE syllabus, the approach to questions on same topic differs. In board exams a student is asked to answer questions of a lower difficulty level. For students studying in boards other than the CBSE, it is advised to go through reference books along with board text books. Focus on the key concepts which will help you ace both board exams as well as the IIT JEE exam. Along with that, build your aptitude for MCQ type tests with more difficult questions.

Studying for one will not affect the other, but preparation strategies need to be kept in mind. GROUP STUDIES Each student has his / her own strengths and weaknesses. Group studies could be effective if the different students can help enhancing each other’s knowledge in separate topics. Also, if one is hesitant to ask doubts in school or classes, can shed their inhibitions and ask their friends. However, it must be kept in mind that the purpose of group studies should be solely studies. Wasting time is not an option for the crucial IIT JEE Preparations.

Group studies is an excellent option to clear doubts and increase knowledge, but time management should not be forgotten. ROLE OF MOCK TESTS, SAMPLE PAPERS and PREVIOUS YEAR PAPERS IIT JEE is an elusive exam.
The JEE Advanced exam pattern is as follows – There are two papers. Both papers have three sections (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) each. Each section has 20 questions. For correct answer student gets +3 marks and for wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted.

Although the pattern is constant, there is no pre defined trend of questions. It will be hard to pin point any particular topic or type of question that makes most of the paper. No question has ever been repeated in the IIT JEE exam. Yet it is highly important to practice from previous year JEE Advanced papers, and previous year IIT JEE Papers. Why? Because practicing from these papers will help student assess the level of difficulty and analyze own preparation on that basis
Sit in a simulated examination environment and attempt a previous year paper. Set time limit. After attempting the complete paper, check your answers against the solutions. Analyze which topics you need to study more.

By attempting mock tests and previous year papers student can self assess and prepare accordingly. SPEED AND ACCURACY IS THE KEY The student is expected to not only understand a given concept but also to apply it in difficult questions. The aim of entrance exam such as IIT JEE is to test their aptitude and ability to work on concepts. But even if a student can solve a given question in five minutes, it will be of no use. For 60 questions, you are given 3 hours (180 minutes).
On an average, you cannot spend more than 3 minutes on each question. For easy and moderate questions, the time taken should be less than 1.5 -2 minutes. For tougher questions, give yourself 3-4 minutes.
If some question is very difficult, it is advised to skip and attempt in the end. Accuracy plays a vital role as each incorrect answer brings down your score by one point. One mark can lead to a large difference in the final IIT JEE rank. Thus it is highly advisable to keep testing yourself in a timed manner. That way the student can build speed and learn to identify correct answer in lesser time.
